A Deep Respect for the Earth

The Boomland project is born from a deep respect for the Earth. Here, water, soil, energy, food, and community intertwine in regenerative practices, creating a living ecosystem where nature, culture, and environmental responsibility evolve together.

Water

One of our most precious resources. Being an invaluable element, it is our responsibility to use it consciously and return it to Nature as clean as we received it.

  • Minimal interference in the ecosystem, with water treatment from restaurants, bars, showers, and infrastructures before, during, and after each edition of the Boom Festival, Being Gathering, and Being Camp.
  • Active awareness of water scarcity, reinforced by the drought situation in Portugal in 2023, recognizing water as a limited resource.
  • Access to drinking water through various points supplied by the public network, fully complying with health and safety requirements.
  • Continuous monitoring of water quality and consumption, with the installation of flow meters at all points to prevent waste.

Soil

In an increasingly warm climate, nourishing the soil is essential to prevent the Boomland region, and the entire country, from turning into a desert. Without using chemical fertilizers and following the principles of agroforestry and permaculture, we can regenerate the land, creating a richer, fresher, and more vibrant ecosystem.

For many years, we have developed methods to enrich the soil and provide it with what it needs to stay healthy. This is the foundation of an ecological path: working with Nature, never against it. In 2006, we introduced, for the first time, compostable toilets (without water or chemicals and that produce soil).

Since then, after many years of research, experimentation, and application, we have perfected the ideal compostable toilet model. Tailored for our ecosystem but applicable in any event or space.

Reforestation

The Boomland reforestation program was a natural step after acquiring the land, as it brings multiple benefits, including the much-needed creation of shade, habitats for diverse fauna, and the enhancement of local biodiversity.

This program started in 2015. Since then, we’ve planted over 1,000 trees and hundreds of shrubs.

Some of the tree species planted include: Acer monspessulanum, Acer pseudoplatanus, Alnus glutinosa, Betula pubescens, Castanea sativa, Celtis australis, Populus alba, Olea europaea var. sylvestris, Prunus avium and Quercus pyrenaica.

Energy

At Boomland, we use energy from the public grid most of the time. In Portugal, between December 31 and January 1, 2023, 44,128 GWh of electricity were generated, of which 70.7% came from renewable sources.

At Boomland, we benefit from this energy. Since 2010, we have had a solar system, which was unfortunately devastated by a fire. Currently, we are developing a project for a solar village at Boomland. Nevertheless, we continue to use solar energy, whether in public lighting or in various water pumps used for irrigating fields and gardens.

Mobility

In 2023, we took another big step in managing the impact of human activities at nature-based festivals. We divided our footprint into three areas: one related to greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, another on actions in water systems, and a third on impact on biodiversity.

We introduced the Mobility Footprint Analysis, which measures greenhouse gas emissions in four areas, and the Mobility and Materials Flow Analysis, a method to measure the carbon footprint of different types of food.

During the Boom Festival and Being Gathering, we provide all restaurants with an app to assess two types of food – vegetarian/vegan vs meat/fish – and rate their impact as Low, Medium, or High.

Packaging

A sustainability policy is applied to both the selection and participation of food vendors and Bazaar vendors, the market of Boom Festival and Being Gathering, considering not only the materials of the products for sale but also their origin, production, and packaging.

100% of the dishes and soaps used by food vendors and bars during our projects are reusable.

We also use 100% biodegradable cups at all our events.

Art and Creativity

Michelangelo’s statement encapsulates our vision of art: that it is a deep connection to the origin. Through art, we give meaning to the world. Art at Boomland is a bridge to our spiritual dimension.

Aesthetics create symbols that help us transcend while connecting us to our personal and social essences. At Boomland, you’ll find a wide diversity of artistic expressions: large sculptures, interactive art, play parks, artistic gardens, installations, water art, immersive environments, land art, digital art, and much more.

Art here is an adventure, a journey of discovery. It is beauty and spirit; it is a celebration.

Nutrition

Boomland is also a space for regeneration and body care, where nutrition plays a central role as a way to nourish and care for our community.

People from all over the world participate in our projects, so we strive to offer a wide variety of cuisines, from Mediterranean to Asian, vegan options or macrobiotic, Ayurvedic, gluten-free, dairy-free, among others.

Our food philosophy is conscious: we prioritize organic products, local or fair trade.

The use of biodegradable cutlery is mandatory.

Social Change

The Boom Karuna Project (created in 2014) was born as a way to redistribute part of the Boom Festival’s profits in support of humanitarian, environmental, and social causes, both locally and internationally.

Currently, 1% of our EBITDA is donated to external organizations aligned with the organization’s core values.

To date, the Boom Karuna Project has contributed approximately €250,000 to various initiatives.
